Overview

Experienced PSP Process Engineer

Stress Engineering Services, Inc. is the premier provider of engineered solutions and professional
consulting services across a wide range of engineering disciplines. Since 1972, our clients have
benefited from our special in-depth technical knowledge and proven performance in failure
analysis, solid mechanics and structural design, reliability and predictive engineering,
instrumentation and testing, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, floating systems, forensics, and
material science. We maintain an excellent reputation within the industries we serve, with more
than 80% of our current business from repeat clients or direct referrals.
We are seeking an experienced process engineer for our Plant Services Practice (PSP) in our
Houston or Cincinnati office. PSP primarily serves the petrochemical and energy industries; but our
engineers may also work in other related fields such as aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and
material processing. This is expected to be a part-time position, working in a support role to SES’s
primary business of mechanical and metallurgical plant services. The candidate will potentially lead
multidisciplinary teams solving challenging problems and providing process engineering
deliverables including thermodynamics, material balances, unit operational simulations to assist
our clients with evaluating and optimizing their processes. A strong balance of technical,
interpersonal, and communication skills (both written and verbal) are required.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate must have the desire to support a successful engineering practice in a
dynamic, work-orientated environment. They must be a self-starter. They will work primarily on an
individual basis, but also need to function well on project teams providing chemical process support
in a predominantly mechanical engineering environment. Additional responsibilities are:

• Execute process engineering tasks both independently and interactively including process
simulation, engineering calculations (hydraulic, heat transfer, relief, etc.), and process review
functions (utilizing PFDs, P&IDs, standard operating procedures, interlock C&E diagrams, etc.). To
enhance process safety, operability, and efficiency, identify process enhancements including
modifications to the client’s operating procedures, operator training program, process control
strategy, process equipment, and process configuration. Provide specific implementation guidance
for these enhancements.
• Assure all process engineering design and/or recommendations meets industry standards
and applicable codes including API, ASME and others used in process design and
development for refineries, petrochemical, mid-stream gas processing facilities and utilities
systems
• Participate in and lead PHAs and HAZOP meetings with other disciplines as well as the client,
that are focused on auto-refrigeration/brittle fracture (AR/BF) hazards in ethylene
production, refinery and gas processing industries.
• In support of AR/BF assessment efforts, develop and assemble client training materials, risk
assessment tools, and guidance/reference documentation.
• Communicate and interface openly and frequently with the other discipline engineers.
Participate in periodic project reviews and client discussions, as required, to ensure client
satisfaction.
• Assist in training employees and support the growth of the overall process practice by
leveraging your process experience with SES’ mechanical design, FEA and CFD analysis
capabilities to provide robust solutions to clients.
• Interface directly with clients in conjunction with our business development team.
• Develop and support process focused projects which draw on the process engineer’s
skills/capabilities, knowledge, experience, and/or corporate relationships which are unique
versus those readily available within a conventional process engineering consulting firm.
• Participate in field visits to client facilities to examine client-identified problems and to
support business development.
• Prepare and review of technical reports and proposals.
• Contribute to the growth of the company by further establishing credibility through
participation in technical associations and code committees, and via preparation of
papers/presentations.
• Key focus on refining, chemical, pipeline, plant equipment and other larger engineering
consulting opportunities.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering with over 20 years of relevant experience.
• A minimum of 15 years’ experience as a practicing engineer with specific experience in the
petrochemicals, oil and gas industry is required. Experience should include manufacturing
site, direct day-to-day process support, process troubleshooting, process design and
optimization, operating procedure development and operator training.
• Process hazard analysis (PHA) participation and lead experience in compliance with an
advanced and robust process risk management standard (required).
• Experience working for a consulting/engineering and construction firm (preferred).
• Specific experience in ethylene production with an appreciation for process hazards related
to auto-refrigeration brittle fracture (preferred).
• Proficiency with Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS steady state simulation software required.
Proficiency should include hydraulic (2-phase), distillation, and heat transfer (including
rigorous heat exchanger) simulation.
• Aspen HYSYS dynamics or Aspen Plus dynamics simulation proficiency (preferred).
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) or possess the ability to become registered.
• Must be willing and able to travel on occasion and work in a variety of environments.
• Travel could be worldwide, and the applicant must have or be able to obtain a passport
without restrictions.
